The film takes place in San Francisco in an abundant community at the home of The Draytons, played by Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn. The living room, den, and the outside patio are where the bulk of the scenes in the film are shot. You see the interaction of the characters throughout these dwell. The rooms are understated and basically fall into the stage background of the scene.
